SAFS Space type 2 SNAKE-EYE & SNAKE EYE RECONNAISSANCE TYPE Sea Pig
I received these kits at around the same time (the Seapig had recently been released and the the Snake Eye was a trade from a friend), and I wanted to try building and painting both together to see if I could finish them quickly and have more things to bring when attending Ma.K Tamagawa later that year. This project quickly became an abject lesson in not trying to take on a big project in a short amount of limited time! While it was able to be saved in the end, there were some hairy moments!
The first hiccup was during construction, somehow I managed to break both the hatch hinges on each kit (on the Seapig even after painting the pilot already) - thus forcing me to build them with the hatches glued shut. At the time, being fairly new to redoing the joints via epoxy sculpt, they were made a little too "lanky" and the kits both look slightly taller than usual when placed next to another SAFS kit with original joint.
The Snake Eye was painted with a mix of Mr. Color RAF colors. The kit comes together quite well, and the only tricky part is the 3-part seam on the back where the middle bulge flows down into where the thrusters come out.
The Seapig adds an extra sprue for the nose sensor (similar to the Raccoon/Prowler sensor with an extra dome), radome, and fuel tanks. It was painted with a mix of Mr. Color Gundam colors. Both bases were made with resin tiles for a space station look.
While I am satisfied with the final appearance of both kits, I would like to eventually revisit both designs with the experience I have gained along with the new techniques I have learned from others. Both designs are great and are modern day Ma.K classics, especially the Snake Eye.
