RGM-79SP GM Sniper II and Type 61 MBT Diorama
The GM Sniper II from 0080 has to be one of the best GM designs in all of Gundam despite getting very little screen time, it made another appearance in the Dreamcast game Rise From the Ashes where it is playable in one mission. It has a very "tactical" look with the visor and the many vents on the legs, so I thought it would be great in a ground war diorama with the 1/144 Type 61 tank that comes with the Ground Gundam in the Hard Graph set.
I was really pleasantly surprised with how easily this kit came together and only a very small modification to the ankle was needed in order to make it achieve a natural kneeling pose.
The kit was hand painted with Tamiya paints and the bazooka is from the Builder's Parts that were being given out around the time of the Build Fighters kit line. The smoke effect is just a bit of cotton around a styrene rod to hold the missile in place.
The very small Type 61 really gives a sense of how large mobile suits actually are. The tarp is simply tissue paper attached with thinned white glue and then painted with acrylics. One of the most surprising things was that it actually came with tiny waterslide decals!
The base is simply a small wooden plaque from an arts and crafts store that was textured with a mix of white glue and sand with tank tracks pressed into epoxy putty. The markings on the GM Sniper are leftover decals from a variety of sources.
This was the kind of project that I think every modeler needs once in a while - something that comes together fairly easily and has a satisfying result without too much fuss. Nothing too fancy attempted that can lead to disappointment and while the final product isn't ground breaking, I now have one of my favorite GMs in a decent display for the collection.
